In all new and existing buildings, there shall be installed a key box for such buildings when the fire chief or police chief determines that access to or within a structure or an area is unduly difficult because of secured openings, or where immediate access is necessary for life-saving, police emergencies, or firefighting purposes. A key box shall be a type as specified by the fire chief and shall contain:

Keys to locked points of ingress, whether on the interior or exterior of such buildings.
(2)
Keys to locked mechanical room.
(3)
Keys to locked electrical rooms.
(4)

Keys to other areas unduly difficult as directed by the fire chief.

The fire chief and police chief shall approve the location of the locked box; provided, however, this section shall not apply to the construction, improvements, or renovations to any single-family residential building.
