Article III. HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT |
§ 11-48. Duties and responsibilities of department.
The duties and responsibilities of the health and social services department are as follows:
(a)
To educate, encourage and assist in bringing health programs to the public;
(b)
To assist in the maintenance of the well-being of our citizens by bringing programs for the prevention and elimination of disease;
(c)
To coordinate and review existing and project health programs available to the public;
(d)
To communicate with private and public health agencies to help expand health programs;
(e)
To make available diagnostic and screening tests without cost, or for a nominal fee for those least able to afford such programs;
(f)
To assist the general public to utilize existing private and governmental programs available to help maintain good health;
(g)
To petition for financial assistance to help carry out these programs;
(h)
To provide for a social service program to include transportation and informational assistance to the indigent and elderly entitled to such service;
(i)
To establish an informational bank to serve citizens in medicare, medicaid, social security and human resources;
(j)
To identify obstacle areas that handicapped persons face in city public areas within the city;
(k)
To identify services that are both needed and/or available to handicapped residents within the city; and
(l)
To generally suggest legislation and/or administrative action that would benefit handicapped residents within the city.
